WRISTON, W.Va. — A Fayette County man is behind bars on federal child neglect charges after deputies received a tip from Child Protective Services.

Deputies entered the home with CPS and found two children under ten years old. The interior of the home was described in a press release as “in horrible unsanitary condition, with animal feces, bugs, molded food and more trash bags”.

On Monday, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department received a call from CPS to assist them at a residence along Deepwater Mountain Road in the area of Wriston. Upon arrival, deputies noticed around 50 bags of trash surrounding the home. One pile was estimated to be about ten feet high.

Wayne Kelly, 44, was arrested and faces two felony counts of Gross Child Neglect Creating the Risk of Serious Bodily Injury or Death. Kelly was arraigned Monday in Fayette County Magistrate Court. He is currently being held at the Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County unable to pay $20,000 bond.

“If adults choose to live in filth and unsanitary conditions, that is their choice,” Fayette County Sheriff Mike Fridley said Tuesday. “However, exposing young children to these conditions is unacceptable.”

The case remains under investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.
