HINTON — A Hinton man was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly threatening to kill his sister and father during a violent domestic disturbance, according to police.

At around 11:30 a.m. on October 7, 2025, Patrolman K. Higginbotham of the Hinton Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting an active domestic situation at a home on Maple Street in Summers County.

When officers arrived, they met a female victim who appeared visibly upset. She told police her brother, Russell Adkins, had been drinking, shouting insults, balling his fists, and threatening to kill her.

Inside the home, officers found Adkins lying on a bed beside a pit bull with a blood-soaked bandage on its head. Both Adkins and the victim said the dog had been injured while “chasing chickens” and was scheduled for a vet visit later in the week.

When questioned, police said Adkins became aggressive, cursing at the officer and using profanities toward his sister.

The victim told police that Adkins had recently been released from jail on a domestic battery charge involving their father, who also lives in the home. The 89-year-old father told officers he feared for his safety, claiming Adkins had struck him in the past.

As Patrolman Higginbotham spoke with the victims in another room, Adkins allegedly charged toward them with clenched fists. The officer ordered him to back down and warned he would be arrested if he continued to act aggressively.

Moments after Higginbotham stepped outside, Adkins reportedly began screaming threats inside the home, shouting that he was “going to kill them.” The officer reentered, drew his department-issued laser, and ordered Adkins to stop.

Police say Adkins advanced toward the officer, ignoring commands. Higginbotham deployed the laser in drive-stun mode, subduing Adkins before placing him in handcuffs.

A search of Adkins’ pockets revealed two cut straws, which officers say are commonly used to ingest controlled substances.

Adkins was arrested and charged with domestic battery, threats of terrorist acts, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was transported to the Southern Regional Jail, and the case remains under investigation by the Hinton Police Department.
