A teacher at Summers County High School has been arrested following an incident involving two students and a staff member.
According to the Summers County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy J.L. Farmer responded to a report of an altercation at the school on Friday, November 7. Investigators determined that two juvenile students had been involved in a physical fight, and as the altercation ended, a teacher intervened and allegedly assaulted one of the students.
The teacher was identified as 42-year-old Ashley McMillan of Hinton.
On Monday, November 10, Deputy Farmer obtained an arrest warrant charging McMillan with Child Abuse Creating Substantial Risk of Injury by a Person in a Position of Trust and Battery. McMillan was later taken into custody and arraigned in Summers County Magistrate Court.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office acknowledged the public concern surrounding incidents in schools and thanked the community for its patience and support. The department also expressed appreciation to the Summers County Board of Education for its cooperation.
Chief Deputy T.S. Adkins commended Deputy Farmer for his professionalism and dedication throughout the investigation.
