ROCK, W.V. — An armed standoff in Mercer County ended Thursday morning with one man dead and another injured following a shooting between two brothers in the Rock area.
According to the West Virginia State Police, the incident began around 9:35 a.m. when Mercer County 911 received a report of a shooting on Rock Road.
Troopers arrived to find 80-year-old Randall Mabe lying in the roadway with gunshot wounds. He told authorities his brother, 72-year-old Fredrick Mabe, had shot him and then barricaded himself inside a nearby home with a handgun.
State Police units surrounded the residence as crisis negotiators, the SRT Delta Team, K9 units, and bomb technicians responded to the scene.
Investigators say the standoff ended when Fredrick Mabe fired at SRT members, who returned fire, fatally striking him.
Fredrick Mabe was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been notified.
Randall Mabe was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, troopers said.
The West Virginia State Police continue to investigate the incident.
