OCEANA, W.Va. (WJLS News) — A Wyoming County man is facing multiple felony charges after a domestic violence call led investigators to uncover allegations of long-term sexual abuse.

According to the West Virginia State Police, troopers responded around 6:24 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, to the Dollar General in Oceana for a report of a physical domestic disturbance.

Upon arrival, a trooper met with Oceana Police Assistant Chief B. Toler and the alleged victim. Assistant Chief Toler determined the incident had taken place in the Jesse area — outside his jurisdiction — and the case was turned over to state police.

Initial arrest

Following the initial investigation, troopers arrested Travis Covert on charges of Domestic Battery and Malicious Assault.
Covert was taken into custody without incident and transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.

Victim interview reveals more serious allegations

Two days later, on Sunday, October 26, the victim met with investigators and advocates at Stop the Hurt in Pineville for a follow-up interview.

During the interview, the victim told investigators Covert had dragged her by the hair, choked her until she nearly lost consciousness, and threatened to kill her if she tried to leave — leading to additional charges of Kidnapping and Strangulation.

The victim also disclosed a pattern of sexual abuse, alleging that Covert had assaulted her since she was around 14 years old. She reported four separate incidents over the past year at their home in Jesse — one involving digital penetration and three involving rape.

Because the accused is related to the victim, authorities filed additional charges of Incest and Second-Degree Sexual Assault.

Felony charges filed

According to the criminal complaint, troopers requested arrest warrants for the following offenses:

  • Four counts of Incest (W.Va. Code 61-8-12(b))

  • Four counts of Second-Degree Sexual Assault (W.Va. Code 61-8B-4(a)(1))

  • Kidnapping (W.Va. Code 61-2-14a(a)(2))

  • Strangulation (W.Va. Code 61-2-9d(b))

Ongoing investigation

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
State Police say additional charges may be filed pending review of forensic evidence and interviews.
