The Raleigh County Veterans & First Responders Museum will host a historic anchor-setting ceremony at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 201 South Eisenhower Drive in Beckley.
The public is invited to witness the installation of a 6,000-pound mooring anchor from the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) — a legendary American aircraft carrier that served the nation for nearly 40 years.
The anchor was removed earlier this year as the ship was dismantled, then transported to West Virginia and refurbished for permanent display. Glen’s Towing will hoist the massive anchor into place, creating a new landmark that honors the carrier’s proud legacy and stands as a symbol of service and sacrifice.
Retired Navy Captain Jerry Shields, who served aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, will be a special guest at the ceremony, sharing reflections and participating in the tribute.
The museum encourages veterans, first responders, and members of the public to attend and take part in honoring those who served aboard the ship.
