The Fayette County Humane Society has entered its final week managing the county animal shelter before control of the facility transfers to the Fayette County Commission on Saturday, October 18.

The organization, which ended its contract with the county last month, said staff are making a final push to find homes for the remaining animals before their departure.

In a statement, the Humane Society wrote, “It’s hard to even type this… this is officially our last week at the shelter. In just six short days, the county will be taking over control of the facility.”

According to the group, ten animals were adopted on Saturday, but many more still need homes. To encourage adoptions, the Humane Society is offering reduced fees throughout the week — $25 adoptions Tuesday through Thursday, and free adoptions for both dogs and cats on Friday, October 17.

“We’re begging, pleading, crying for these dogs to find their forever families before we leave,” the statement continued. “They’ve waited long enough — and they deserve a lifetime of love, not uncertainty.”

The Fayette County Commission is set to assume full operation of the shelter beginning Sunday, October 19.
