After years of complaints about deteriorating conditions, major improvements are now underway at Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources recently updated local lawmakers, outlining several upgrades completed between 2024 and 2025.
A new Wildlife Resource Specialist was hired last fall, and maintenance crews have been busy with groundskeeping, road repairs, and campground upkeep.
Construction is also moving forward on a new headquarters and storage building, a $1.16 million project expected to be finished by spring 2026.
Other improvements include resurfaced roads and boat ramps, new gates and signage, additional security cameras, and safety upgrades at the shooting range.
In the Fisheries Management Unit, three new courtesy docks have been added, along with resurfaced fishing piers and dredged ramps. Crews have also installed lighting, improved drainage, and cleared brush to make fishing access easier.
Delegate Elliott Pritt of Fayette County praised the DNR’s efforts, saying he’s thankful for their cooperation and commitment to restoring Plum Orchard Lake.
The lake, located near Pax, remains one of southern West Virginia’s favorite spots for fishing, boating, and camping.
