Deputies responding to a shots-fired complaint in Greenbrier County on September 18 found themselves investigating a very different kind of disturbance.

A woman called 911 reporting that she heard gunfire and rocks being thrown at her home, telling dispatchers that one of the bullets even sounded as if it passed near her head.

Cpl. R. McDaniel was the first officer on scene and determined that no gunfire had struck the residence. A closer look revealed that the disturbance actually involved a crossbow and property damage.

Deputies discovered a van on the property with three shattered windows and an arrow lodged in the rear quarter panel. Witnesses reported that the complainant’s husband, identified as Mr. Tingler, had broken the windows and fired the arrow while two people stood nearby — placing them in potential danger.

The cost of the damage was estimated at about $300 per window, with additional repairs needed for the damaged quarter panel.

When Tingler later returned to the scene, deputies said he admitted to firing the arrow and showed them where he had left the crossbow.

The van, which had no registration plate, was too cluttered for deputies to locate a VIN number.

Charges against Tingler are pending as the investigation continues.
