A Bluefield man is behind bars after leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash Monday afternoon.
Matthew James Davis, 39, faces multiple charges from the incident, including obstructing an officer, fleeing, making false statements, and interfering with emergency communications. He also faces charges from outstanding warrants connected to a March 2025 shooting in Princeton, along with charges in Monroe County.
According to Sgt. K.A. Filer, the chase began around 2:30 p.m. after Davis allegedly tried to run over Athens Police Officer Charlie Lowe during a traffic stop. Authorities tracked his vehicle onto I-77, where speeds exceeded 130 miles per hour.
Davis eventually exited at Mercer Springs Road, ran a stop sign, and crashed into another vehicle, seriously injuring the driver.
In the March incident, Davis was accused of shooting a man on Mercer Street in Princeton and fleeing in a stolen vehicle. He was also wanted in Monroe County on charges of grand larceny and fraudulent schemes.
Davis is now being held at the Southern Regional Jail on $70,000 cash-only bond.
